A San Diego Itinerary 7 Days of Exploration and Fun Adventures

In this San Diego itinerary 7 days, I’ll give you a well-rounded plan for how to see San Diego in all its glory. In 7 days you can get a lot done. This itinerary is packed with goodness, but it’s also not for the faint of heart. If you like a slower place, feel free to cut out some of the stops to meet your needs.

I’ve frequented San Diego many times, I know the area and the attractions that most people want to visit for their first time in SD. It’s a beautiful place with lots to do. So lets get started with some San Diego trip planning!

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days: Day 1

Stop #1: La Jolla Cove

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - La Jolla Cove

9-11:30am (2.5 hrs)

La Jolla Cove, situated in the northern part of San Diego, is a coastal gem that attracts visitors from around the world. With its scenic beauty, vibrant marine life and variety of water activities, it’s a must-see destination for any first timer or returning visitor.

Famed for its striking sandstone cliffs and clear, blue waters, the cove is a photographer’s paradise. In fact it’s one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California.

Whether you’re relaxing on the beach, watching playful seals and sea lions, or exploring under the sea, the La Jolla shores area is a bustling area with plenty to see and do.

For thrill-seekers, the cove is ideal for water sports, including snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, parasailing and paddleboarding.

Guided tours are available for those wanting a deeper experience, though keep in mind the water can be cold, and a wetsuit may be helpful. I know for me the Pacific Ocean waters are quite cold and a wetsuit would be necessary, but that’s just me.

If you’re thinking of snorkeling, keep this in mind. Because La Jolla Cove is within the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, the marine life is protected and plentiful, making this a great place to snorkel and dive. If you’re snorkeling, staying close to shore will give you the best visibility and encounters with marine life.

While the cove is generally calm, it’s important to respect the ocean’s unpredictability. Always check with lifeguards before heading out, as conditions can change quickly.

After your ocean adventures, rinse off at the beach showers and relax on the sand. You’ll want to shower to continue your adventure and next stops for the day.

If you prefer to stay on land, you can take a scenic walk along the Coast Walk Trail or bask in the sun while observing the local wildlife and people watch.

With 7 days in California, La Jolla Cove is a fantastic spot for families, couples, solo travelers and more, offering a safe and enjoyable environment for all ages.

However, it does get busy, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early will help you find parking and enjoy a more peaceful visit. Be aware that to get to La Jolla Cove and down to the beach, there is a good amount of walking. For those who have mobility issues, take your time, but I promise the views are worth it!

For hiking enthusiasts, nearby options like Torrey Pines State Beach or Sunset Cliffs provide stunning alternatives. I will address Sunset Cliffs further in the itinerary if you choose to see this marvelous natural phenomena.

While those spots offer breathtaking views, La Jolla Cove delivers a more well-rounded beach experience and one that anyone can enjoy.

Safety Tip #1

Always keep a respectful distance from the seals and sea lions, as they can be territorial and may become aggressive if disturbed.

With its stunning natural landscapes, abundant wildlife and array of activities, La Jolla Cove embodies the charm of Southern California’s coastline, making it an unforgettable destination.

Stop #2: La Jolla Village for Lunch

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Cuban Empanadas

11:30am-1pm (1.5 hrs)

It’s now time to refuel after your La Jolla Cove adventure. By now you’ve worked up an appetite. Luckily, the La Jolla Village is nearby which offers a delightful mix of dining options, shopping and cultural attractions.

Havana Kitchen – This local favorite offers classic Cuban dishes like the Cubano sandwich and flavorful roast pork platter.

Sugar & Scribe – Craving a delicious breakfast or brunch? This popular spot is a must-visit, although be prepared for a potential wait.

If you’re looking for more dining options and cultural experiences, continue your adventure toward Balboa Park. Here are a couple more suggestions that are closer to the next destination.

Common Stock– Enjoy satisfying American fare, including crispy fried chicken and refreshing salads.

Goi Cuon – Opt for healthier Vietnamese dishes like banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) and spring rolls.

Whether you choose the vibrant La Jolla Village or the cultural hub of Balboa Park, you’re in for a treat. Enjoy your meal and get ready for the next part of your San Diego adventure. And don’t forget to appreciate Balboa Park for providing 11 free parking lots!

1pm-1:30pm (30 min)

Stop #3: Balboa Park

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Balboa Park

1:30-6pm (4.5 hrs)

A cornerstone of San Diego’s charm, Balboa Park stretches across 1,200 acres, offering a diverse array of experiences. From world-class museums and stunning architecture to serene gardens, shops and vibrant performing arts, this iconic park is a must-visit for any San Diego trip itinerary.

While a single day can barely scratch the surface, a visit to Balboa Park is essential for any San Diego itinerary. Given the extensive offerings, especially the numerous museums, it’s advisable to prioritize one or two attractions to maximize your time.

For those seeking free activities, the Timken Museum of Art and nearly all of the park’s gardens are excellent options. However, the Japanese Friendship Garden and the Botanical Garden at the San Diego Zoo require admission fees.

Beyond museums, explore Balboa Park’s walking trails, admire its beautiful architecture, and browse the unique shops. The House of Pacific Relations Cottages, Spanish Village Art Center, and United Nations Building offer additional free attractions.

If relaxation is your goal, pack a picnic and enjoy the park’s scenic beauty. For a more immersive experience, consider exploring one of Balboa Park’s many museums. However, given their size and depth, dedicating time to a single museum allows for a more fulfilling visit.

By focusing on one museum, you can also fully appreciate Balboa Park’s other attractions, such as its gardens and architecture.

Choosing a San Diego museum to see can seem overwhelming with so many choices.

Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum

San Diego Air & Space Museum

San Diego Model Railroad Museum

San Diego Natural History Museum

For families with children or those seeking a diverse experience, Balboa Park offers a wealth of options and a variety of museums dedicated to art, science or history.

If you plan to visit multiple museums, consider the Explorer Pass. The Limited Pass, allowing four museum visits in a day, is ideal for those with more time. However, given our itinerary’s four-hour allotment, selecting a single museum ensures a more immersive experience.

Vanessa’s Tip

To minimize stress and maximize your enjoyment, pre-determine your museum choice. With so many options, planning ahead saves time and energy.

Beyond museums, Balboa Park hosts a variety of performing arts events. Check the schedule and ticket prices for various venues to see if a show aligns with your plans.

Lastly, you may opt for a Balboa Park tour. Get the lay of the land and find out its rich history by taking a tour from a local. There’s a lot to see and do here so why not explore the area with someone who understands the landscape and can guide you over the course of a couple hours.

Stop #4: Little Italy

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Little Italy

6pm-8pm (2 hrs)

San Diego’s Little Italy, the largest Italian-themed neighborhood in the United States, is a culinary haven. With its abundance of restaurants, shops, cafes, galleries, and hotels, it’s a must-visit destination for any 7-day San Diego trip.

Given the plethora of dining options, planning ahead is key. Consider factors like wait times and seating preferences. While Little Italy offers numerous outdoor dining options with heaters, indoor dining might require reservations, especially on weekends.

Before indulging in the main course, save room for dessert. Extraordinary Desserts, a local institution, is a must-visit.

Ristorante Illando – This charming, tucked-away spot serves classic Italian cuisine, from pasta and pizza to salads and wine.

Vinarius Wine Bar– For a more focused wine experience, Vinarius offers a curated menu and extensive wine list.

Civico 1845 – Known for its Southern Italian cuisine and commitment to sustainability, Civico 1845 also caters to vegan diners.

After dinner, head to Extraordinary Desserts for a delightful array of cakes, pies, cookies, cupcakes and bars. The larger location near Little Italy offers gluten-free and vegan options.

To easily reach Extraordinary Desserts, walk from Little Italy. Parking can be challenging in the area.

Alternatively, you could do a food tour in Little Italy! What fun it would be to taste a variety of Italian dishes and at the same time learn about the architecture and history. An experienced local will guide you through this quaint area and the tour is about three and a half hours. If you do this food tour, you will likely skip Extraordinary Desserts. You would be too full!

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Gaslamp Quarter

8:30pm+

The Gaslamp Quarter, a vibrant hub of nightlife in downtown San Diego, offers a diverse array of experiences. From lively bars and lounges to clubs, theaters and restaurants, this bustling neighborhood caters to a wide range of preferences.

Moonshine Flats – For country music enthusiasts, Moonshine Flats offers a lively atmosphere with live bands, dancing, and the opportunity to learn line dancing.

The Shout! House – If you prefer a more relaxed setting, The Shout! House is a piano bar where you can enjoy talented musicians performing popular songs. Keep in mind that a cover charge may apply, depending on the time of visit.

Prohibition – For a speakeasy experience, Prohibition offers a 1920s-themed lounge with a cozy ambiance. Enjoy live music, handcrafted cocktails, and the intimate atmosphere. Remember to dress appropriately, as there’s a dress code. Reservations are not required.

If these don’t interest you, don’t worry. There are plenty of other options, most of which revolve around bars and restaurants. Generally, like most places with nightlife, Gaslamp attracts a younger crowd. So you can expect loud music, lots of people walking around and lively entertainment. Find a relaxed, casual bar and have a craft beer or choose a more upscale atmosphere with trendy cocktails and snazy drinks. There are many options here, so walk around and see what interests you.

Vanessa’s Tip

Just a note of caution. While San Diego is generally safe, it’s advisable to exercise caution in the Gaslamp Quarter, as it has a higher concentration of homeless individuals compared to other areas. Stick to well-populated tourist areas to ensure your safety.

Transportation Tip

Consider taking the MTS Trolley to the Santa Fe Depot Station (Blue Line or Green Line depending on where you’re coming from) to get to the USS Midway Museum. Avoid driving and parking hassles.

Stop #1b: Maritime Museum of San Diego

10am-1pm (3 hrs)

Want to explore San Diego’s rich maritime history? Check out the Maritime Museum! This waterfront gem has a bunch of cool historic ships, including the Star of India, the oldest sailing ship still at sea.

Step aboard these floating time capsules and imagine what life was like for sailors back in the day. See towering sailing ships, steamboats and even a submarine. The museum’s exhibits are super interesting and will teach you a lot about the sea.

For a more personalized experience, consider guided tours or boat excursions. These are a great way to learn even more about the ships and the history behind them.

After exploring the museum, head over to Seaport Village, a charming waterfront district with lots of shops, restaurants and entertainment. It’s just a short walk or trolley ride away.

Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a fun day out, the Maritime Museum of San Diego is a must-visit!

Transportation Tip

From the Maritime Museum to Seaport Village is just a 4 min drive. But if you don’t have a car or are looking for a car-free option, you can walk which will take you a little over 20 minutes.

You also have the option of taking the MTS Trolley Green Line and get off at Seaport Village, but this will also take around 20 minutes.

Drive and park

1pm-1:30pm (30 min)

Stop #2: Seaport Village

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Seaport Village

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - San Diego Zoo

Full Day

The San Diego Zoo, the main attraction at Balboa Park, is a highlight of SD. Spanning over 100 acres, this world-renowned zoo is home to an incredible diversity of animals from around the globe.

Embark on a global adventure without leaving the city. Explore nine distinct habitats, each showcasing unique wildlife. From the majestic elephants in Elephant Odyssey to the elusive red pandas in Asian Passage, you’ll be enchanted by the beauty of all walks of life. Witness the powerful polar bears in Northern Frontier, encounter the fascinating reptiles in Reptile Walk, or wander through the lush Asian and African forests of Lost Forest.

Elevate your experience with guided tours, exclusive animal encounters, or VIP packages. And for those seeking even more adventure, the San Diego Safari Park offers a different kind of wildlife experience, but it’s a bit of a drive away (45-60 minutes) from San Diego.

Due to the proximity, if you need to choose between the two, I would go with the San Diego Zoo. If you have another spare day, the Safari Park could be another option.

For most first-time visitors, the San Diego Zoo is the ideal choice. With its diverse animal collection, engaging exhibits, and convenient location, it’s a truly unforgettable experience.

Beyond the animals, the zoo also offers a variety of educational programs and events throughout the year. From interactive exhibits to animal encounters, there’s something new to discover. And for a truly immersive experience, consider staying at the zoo’s on-site hotel, the Best Western Plus Zoo Safari.

Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a family seeking a fun-filled day out, or simply looking for a unique experience, the San Diego Zoo is a must-visit destination.

San Diego Safari Park takes you on an open-air adventure. With its larger enclosures and natural habitats, this park offers a unique experience that’s perfect for those seeking a more immersive wildlife encounter.

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days: Day 5

Stop #1: Sunset Cliffs

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Sunset Cliffs

9am-10am (1 hr)

Sunset Cliffs is a hidden gem in San Diego, but there’s a secret to getting the most out of it: low tide. If you’re an adventure seeker, you’ll want to only go at low tide.

When the tide is low, a magical cave opens up, revealing a breathtaking view of this open sea cave. You can even explore the tide pools around it and spot some cool sea creatures. But if you miss low tide, you’ll only get a bird’s-eye view of the cave and it’s not as exciting.

So, check the tide charts before you go (Surf Forecast is a great resource). If you can time your visit right, you’ll have hours of fun exploring the cliffs and the cave. But if you’re there during high tide, it might be a quick in-and-out.

The open cave is truly something special, especially on a sunny day. It’s a bit crowded, so be careful, and remember, those cliffs are steep! But the views are totally worth it.

Beyond the cave, Sunset Cliffs offers stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. You can watch surfers ride the waves, spot sea lions sunbathing on the rocks, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this coastal haven.

To make the most of your visit, consider bringing a picnic blanket and some snacks. You can find a few spots along the cliffs where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hike along the trails that lead to other scenic viewpoints.

Remember, Sunset Cliffs is a popular destination, so be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends and during peak tourist season. But with a little planning and patience, you can experience the magic of this coastal gem.

It is difficult to put Sunset Cliffs into a set itinerary and visit at a specific time. Because if you want to visit during low tide, those hours change every day. And if you go during low tide, you’ll need more than just 1 hour to visit. So some arranging of the schedule may be needed.

However, if you don’t have any interest in making the hike into the cave and just want to view it from the outside, this itinerary for San Diego allots 1 hour to explore the area. This is plenty of time to appreciate the beauty of this place.

Safety Tip #2

Getting to the bottom to enter the cave is not an easy feat. Find a trail that’s not too steep or dangerous. It’s best to start your trek down to the cave at the beginning of low tide so you’ll have ample time to hang out at the bottom before high tide approaches. You don’t want to get stuck down there at high tide!

Drive to Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma (10 min)

Stop #2: Point Loma

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Point Loma

10am-12pm (2 hrs)

Point Loma, a scenic peninsula south of Sunset Cliffs, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and outdoor adventure. With its stunning ocean views, tide pool exploration, and glimpses into San Diego’s rich maritime heritage, Point Loma is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists alike.

To make the most of your visit, start at the Visitors Center. Here, you can get the latest information on weather conditions, tide schedules, and any scheduled talks or events. This will help you plan your visit and ensure you don’t miss out on anything.

This is one of the highlights of the area. Built in 1855, this historic landmark offers a glimpse into the past and a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the lighthouse keepers. Take a self-guided tour, explore the interactive exhibits, or opt for an audio tour for a more immersive experience.

For nature enthusiasts, this monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the Spanish explorer who first stepped foot on California land. Explore the park’s hiking trails, enjoy stunning ocean views and learn about the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

If you’re visiting during low tide, be sure to explore the tide pools along the Coastal Trail. These tide pools are teeming with marine life, and offer a fascinating opportunity to observe creatures in their natural habitat. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to get a little wet! For the tide schedule check out the Surf Forecast Website.

This lookout point offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is a prime spot for spotting gray whales as they make their journey to Baja California during whale migration season (December to March).

Beyond these attractions, Point Loma offers a variety of other activities and amenities. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the scenic coastal trails, relax on one of the many beaches, or enjoy a picnic with stunning ocean views.

This place is great for history buffs, nature lovers or those simply seeking a relaxing day out. With its combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and outdoor activities, Point Loma is a popular destination for anyone exploring San Diego.

Stop #4: Old Town San Diego

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Old Town San Diego

2pm-3:30pm (1.5 hrs)

Old Town San Diego, the birthplace of California, is a living testament to the region’s rich history. Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people for millennia, the area underwent a profound transformation with the arrival of European settlers. This fusion of Kumeyaay, Spanish, Mexican and American cultures has shaped Old Town into a vibrant tapestry of traditions and diversity.

Step back in time as you explore this preserved state historic park. Discover restored chapels, churches, a courthouse and the region’s first schoolhouse. Immerse yourself in the area’s heritage through free museum exhibits or take a spine-chilling tour of the Whaley House, a famously haunted landmark.

To gain a deeper understanding of the Kumeyaay people, visit the Serra Museum. This cultural institution offers insights into the traditions, history, and contributions of this indigenous group.

Beyond its historical significance, Old Town is a delightful destination for shopping, dining and simply enjoying the charming atmosphere.

Drive and park

3:30pm-4pm (30 min)

Stop #5: Belmont Park & Mission Beach

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Belmont Park

4pm-7pm (3hrs)

Belmont Park, a nostalgic boardwalk gem in Mission Beach, offers a quintessential California coastal experience. Located at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and West Mission Bay Drive, this iconic amusement park can be enjoyed by thrill-seekers, families and beach lovers alike.

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days: Day 6

Stop #1: Legoland

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Legoland

Full Day

Before I get into Legoland, let me first say that Legoland is not just for kids. It’s great for adults too. Personally, I love Legos and the creative things you can create with them. But a whole land dedicate to these building blocks is pretty awesome.

There are Legolands all over the world, but the one in San Diego is the only one on the west coast of the United States. Imagine large life-size Lego figurines, decor and rides that look like Legos and a large area filled with Lego structures mimicking various parts of the world, architectural buildings and landscapes. It’s a place of imagination, creativity and fun.

While you might not ride all the rides or think they are too ‘kiddish’ for any adult, there are plenty of things to do and see that don’t make you seem like you’re too old. There are also many food establishments, games and shops to frequent.

The best part about Legoland (in my opinion) is Miniland USA. This area has many recreations of various cities such as Las Vegas, New York, Southern California, San Francisco and many specialized displays all made out of Legos! It’s truly a masterpiece and a superb display of what you can do with Legos.

You can even check out the Legoland Hotel which is right before the entrance of the park. It’s a fun place to walk through and check out.

Great for families, young kids and big kids, Legoland is a great place to visit if like Legos and theme parks.

  • Legoland is located in Carlsbad, about a 35 min drive from San Diego without traffic
  • Legoland requires you to purchase tickets ahead of time
  • This is a cashless resort, so bring your plastic
  • Operating hours vary depending on the day so check the website for current times
  • Lines can get very long. If you want to go on the LEGO Technic Coaster, get there early and go on that one first

Family vacation packages are available as well as one day or multi-day tickets.

I recommend you stay the night in Carlsbad because the next day will slowly take you back down to San Diego.

Stop #1a: The Flower Fields

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - The Flower Fields

9am-12pm (3 hrs)

If you stay in Carlsbad the night before, this next place is just next door to Legoland and is one of the most picturesque places in SoCal.

If you are visiting San Diego from March through May, The Flower Fields in Carlsbad is a great place to visit. The Fields show a beautiful display of ranunculus flowers that span across 55 acres of land showcasing a rainbow of colors. While at the Fields you can take the Tractor Wagon Ride for an additional fee, see the orchid greenhouse, bird aviaries, mine for gems, see various themed gardens and munch on some snacks.

The Flower Fields are a must see when in Carlsbad and when the flowers are in bloom. Any other time of the year, it’s closed. So if you’re in San Diego mid May through February, enjoy this alternate option, Annie’s Canyon.

Stop #1b: Annie’s Canyon

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Annies Canyon

9am-10am (1 hr)

Annie’s Canyon Trail is one of my favorite trails in San Diego. Why? It’s just really unique and fun. If you decided to stay the night in Carlsbad the night before, Annie’s Canyon is about a 17 minute drive south. If you are coming from San Diego, you’ll have to drive about 25 minutes north. It’s right off the 5 fwy so it’s easy to get to.

What’s special about Annie’s Canyon are the high slot canyon sandstone walls. The beige walls are smooth and the pathways are narrow. You get to climb some ladders and at the end you get a beautiful view.

  • The pathways are narrow so if you’re claustrophobic, this may not be the best hike for you
  • Once at the slot canyon, the movement of people is only one way
  • Due to the ladders, small children, pets or those who have difficulty climbing, may need assistance

The full trail is a loop and will take a little over an hour to complete. It’s an easy to moderate hike as there are some steep hills to climb in the beginning of the hike. But once you get to the slot canyon it will all be worth it!

There is plenty of free parking near the trailhead so parking shouldn’t be a problem.

Stop #2: Blacks Beach

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Blacks Beach

10:30am-12:30pm (2 hrs)

As you continue to make your way down south, you’ll hit Blacks Beach. This beautiful beach is also a nudist beach. So don’t be surprised if you see people walking around naked. But the beach itself is gorgeous and it gets large swells which makes it a great spot for surfers.

It’s a secluded beach in the Torrey Pines area, making it a hidden gem to most first timers. On top of the cliffs is a glider port. So you might see hang gliders and paragliders soar over the cliffs and over the water.

Enjoy the scenery, take a walk along the beach, lay out and relax. That’s what Blacks Beach is about. Be sure to bring your towel, sunblock and water.

However, Black’s Beach is not easy to access. Some of the trails have been overused by visitors and unmaintained making the trails unsafe. The safest and best way to get to Blacks Beach is by the paved road off of La Jolla Farms Road. There are restrooms here as well.

The only issue with taking this path is that you’ll have to walk a while along the beach to get to the heart of Blacks Beach. But it’s better to take the safe route.

Be aware that dogs are not allowed. The cliff walls can also be unstable and slide. So it’s best to not situate yourself too close to them.

Vanessa’s Tip

Most of the nudity takes place on the northern side of Blacks Beach. So if that’s not your thing, stay more south. Most of the nudists are men. Just be aware of your surroundings as the beach is quite secluded.

After a hike and the beach, it’s time for lunch. Head over to Pacific Beach for a nice, casual lunch. Parking in Pacific Beach can be challenging. You may be able to find free parking closer to Tourmaline Street or the north side of the pier.

There are small scattered paid parking lots around Grand Avenue and Pacific Beach Drive. Don’t get discouraged, you’ll find something.

Drive and park

12:30pm-1pm (30 min)

Stop #3: Lunch

1pm-2pm (1 hr)

Pacific Beach is a casual area south of La Jolla but north of Mission Beach. It’s a young, hip beach town with a chill vibe. Expect to see a younger crowd here. This is a great place to explore and grab lunch.

Hideaway – From artisanal pizza to lobster rolls to burgers and brunch items, Hideaway feels like you’re in a bungalow, taking a step away from the chaos of life. It’s trendy and casual at the same time, but it’s a great place to relax and enjoy some comfort food.

Fish & Things Poke Bar – With a Hawaiian and Japanese flair, this is the spot for sushi and sashimi. Indulge in their rolls, have a poke bowl or seafood taco. This place is perfect for a hot summer day or if you’re in the mood for fish.

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood – When in San Diego, some Mexican food is in order. Choose from tacos, burritos, tortas, cucarachas and fish stew. WIth a focus on seafood, you’re in for a delicious treat. This casual spot is good for a quick and simple meal.

Stop #4: Pacific Beach Pier

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days - Pacific Beach

2pm-3pm (1 hr)

While you’re in Pacific Beach, you might as well check out the area. Take a stroll along the Ocean Front Walk and Crystal Pier. It’s a nice scenic beach with trendy as well as casual bars and cafes. The beach is equipped with lifeguards, bathrooms and showers.

Stop #5: Your Choice

3pm+

The rest of the day is up to you. Perhaps you didn’t get to go to one of the places in the first 6 days of the itinerary. Or maybe you wanted to spend more time at a particular place. This is the time to fulfill that desire.

I wanted to leave some free time to choose something that interests you. And since this is the last day of the itinerary, this is your chance to find some souvenirs, do something very niche and different or simply relax by the pool. It’s up to you.

In these 7 days, you will experience so much in the San Diego area. Seven days in San Diego is quite a long time for a tourist and it’s more than enough time to see all the major hot spots.

Here is one option if you are unsure of how to fill in the gap. Take a wine tasting sidecar tour. Over the course of 2.5 hours you’ll explore San Diego in a sidecar and then do some wine tasting. No need to drive either!

Tour Options: Side Car or Beach Cruiser

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days: Transportation

When it comes to transportation, there is no ‘best’ way to get around the area. While renting a car can get expensive due to the actual cost of the rental, parking costs and gas, it gives you the most flexibility in terms of getting around. Some hotels have high overnight parking fees so be sure to research this before booking a hotel or deciding if you want to rent a car.

Taking Uber and Lyft are possibilities. These options will also be expensive, but it will save on parking and gas. These are good options if you will not be in San Diego for many days. Using Uber or Lyft is also good for going out at night when drinking is involved.

Taking public transportation is possible and it’s the cheapest solution. But you will need to learn the different transportation systems and how they work. You’ll need to figure out the time table for different stops and the routes. It will take more research and planning on your part so you don’t get lost.

While within the city it’s a bit easier to get around with public transportation, if you want to head north for Legoland, San Diego Safari Park, Annie’s Canyon, the Flower Fields or Blacks Beach, you will have a more difficult time using public transportation to do so. For these places, it’s best to rent a car.

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days: What to Wear

Depending on the time of year you come to San Diego, the weather can be really nice or on the cold side. Especially at night, it can get pretty chilly. It’s often cooler in San Diego than it is in LA. It’s best to check the 10 day forecast for San Diego California to see what the weather may be like.

It’s always best to bring layers for the daytime vs. nighttime. Being by the beach, it can get breezy. So if you tend to get cold easily, bring a jacket or sweater. Overall, the weather is generally nice and comfortable. Flip flops, a good pair of walking shoes, sunblock, sunglasses and a hat are recommended.

San Diego Itinerary 7 Days: FAQ

Not necessarily. San Diego is more relaxed, smaller and less congested. It’s known for their beach vibe, museums, great food and temperate climate. Los Angeles is more hustle and bustle. It’s large and covers a lot of area so it’s spread out. LA has just about anything you want to do, but you may have to drive a lot to get there. LA is a melting pot of cultures and thus has lots of diversity in food, activities and experiences.

The cheapest time of year to visit San Diego is around September through November as kids are back in school and summer is over.

You need at least 3 days. You’ll need more if you want to visit theme parks. Three days will give you a well rounded overview of the area and the ability to experience a variety of attractions.

You can make any place more expensive or more cheap based on the activities you do, the accommodations you make and the restaurants you frequent. But in general, I would say San Diego is cheaper from an accommodation and transportation standpoint. But food and activities can be evenly priced.

San Diego is known for their beautiful beaches, temperate weather, museums, food and theme parks. It’s laid back nature and easy going vibe make it a great destination for many travelers.

Yes, you can swim in the ocean, but it will be cold. The Pacific Ocean waters are very cold all year round. So if you want to swim in the ocean but get cold easily, I would recommend a wetsuit.

Yes, in general Gaslamp Quarter is safe. But like anywhere, you should always be aware of your surroundings and it’s best to stay in the main areas. There are pockets around the area where homeless people live so it’s best to avoid them, especially at night.

The best way to get from LA to San DIego without a car is to take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train. You can take it from Union Station (LAX) to the Old Town Transportation Center (OLT) or Santa Fe Depot (SAN). There are various stops in between in Orange County (Fullerton, Anaheim, Irvine and more). The train ride will take a little less than 3 hours with 7-8 stops in between. Pricing is reasonable.

Some may say the nicest beach is La Jolla Cove due to the sandstone cliffs and amazing views, but there are many beautiful beaches. Some other popular beaches that are also beautiful are Black’s Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Torrey Pines State Beach and Sunset Cliffs Beach.

The best month to visit San Diego is September when the crowds of summer have subsided, the kids are back in school, the weather is still nice and prices are better.
